F Marks The Spot

I find myself delighted that newscaster Sue Simmons can cuss like a sailor, though of course I find myself wondering why. The apology was a nice touch, for an unapologetic apology that is. So, what got her so angry that she lost her lacquered composure? More importantly though is the fact that she's a 64 year old woman holding her own decade after decade on network television. Wow. Take note unrecognizable and over-botoxed starlets- you can be talented, look stunning and still take your adoring public by surprise from time to time.

Blogathon

I've been getting a lot of e-mail from folks wondering why my blog isn't updated that frequently. To be honest, much as I'd love to post more regularly- life and work (and work, and work, and work) kind of get in the way. The last year was brutal, not just professionally, but personally and health wise, and I've been trying to streamline my commitments to everyone but myself.

While I've been slacking off somewhat on blogging at least, a group of colleagues have declared May to be the month for a blog post a day. Spearheaded by Michelle Rafter of WordCount, these intrepid souls have committed to one post a day for the entire month- I'm wishing them well!

Some of the bloggers and friends who've signed up for the challenge include:

  • Jane Boursaw of FilmGecko who promises to feature some of the other bloggers by way of the movies- should be interesting.
  • Diana Burrell one half of the Renegade Writers (*waves* to Linda Formichelli- the other half)
  • Trish Lawrence who is allowing us to live vicariously while she's off to London
  • Charmian Christie- who's always cooking something up
  • Jen Miller - the original Jersey Girl (yes, we all feel inclined to add in the la, la, las but will resist)
  • Dara Chadwick who's been writing about body image, mothers and daughters
  • Marijke Durning- a nurse turned writer who blogs about both
  • Leah Ingram who's trying to raise a lean green family
  • Janine Adams - who I wish could save me from being overwhelmed by clutter!

The Outer Boroughs Are Cool, Just Ask Sarah Jessica Parker

Reading Sunday's New York Times was sort of like stepping into a time warp. Most torturous wasn't actually the piece on the $300k book deal blogger, but rather a tired PR puff piece masquerading as a lifestyle trend, about sex columnist to the young and snarky Julia Allison setting her sights on the crown of Carrie Bradshaw. Apparently, the young, fabulous and not afraid to sleep their way to better shoes and pricier zip codes are still dreaming of a 212 lifestyle.

Sarah Jessica Parker on the other hand, admitted to the Daily News' Ben Widdicombe that [Manhattan] is "a really hard city, and it's very expensive and it's not what it used to be." Then again, she's also deemed the ugly stepsister boroughs to be sexy. No really - "The outer boroughs are pretty sexy. It's just a matter of time before they have their own shows." Hmmm. Maybe Ms. Parker is simply eager to publicly embrace her aging, gestating and parenting former fans. Or maybe she realizes that in today's economy Carrie Bradshaw's limited talents and garish wardrobe would probably have her taking a buyout if offered, and moving to Astoria?

Being cool doesn't depend on your zip code or shoes, or wearing hideous clothing because a costume designer deems them fashionable, or trying desperately to fit into an unrealistic celluloid lifestyle- it's all about the attitude, but you already knew that, right?
